However, there is no record of them ever having married - perhaps once bitten, twice shy in his case - only that in 1942 she changed her surname by deed poll to ‘Stephens’. They had no children and she died in Lincoln in 1992. With his second wife Joan – but there is no evidence that they ever married. On 9 th September 1939 Stephens re-enlisted and joined MI5. His referee was Field Marshal Lord Birdwood, a former GOC Northern Command and Commander-in-Chief in India who presumably he knew from his time there. The unclear records suggest Stephens rejoined as a Territorial and was gazetted either to the Intelligence Corps or the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry or was on the General List. Whatever military organisation he belonged to on paper, he continued to wear his Indian Army uniform throughout his time with the Security Service.
